Situated 56 km frm Dalhousie, beyond Khajair,
Chamba is at 926 meteres-quite a bit lower than Dalhousie so it is
warmer in summer. Perched on a ledge high above the river
Ravi it has often been com pared with a medieval Italian village
and is famed for its Temples. The town is famous for its Shepard's
(Gaddis) who move there flock to the alpine pastures during the summer
and descend at Kangra, Mandi & Bilaspur in the winter.
Temples: Chamundra Temple it give a
good hill top view of the Chamba with its slate-roof houses. Next to the
Maharaja's palace is the Temple complex of Lakshmi Narayan which
contains six Temples dedicated Lord Siva and Lord Vishnu. The sikhara-type
Hariraya Temple is also dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
Bhuri Singh Meuseum: This museum has a collection of art and culture
of this region.
Places to stay: The HPTDC has two
tourist bunglows : the Hotel Champak with doubles, and the more up
market Hotel Iravati, The hotel Akhand Chandi on college road has A/C
Rooms. Hotel Janta is a cheaper option. The Gupta Dhaba is a good joint
for food, The Olive Green Restaurant on Temple road is also recommended.
At the Khalsa tea stall you can get the actual tea and toast with butter
taste
